- 1). Find a sealable container with a tight-fitting lid to put the transmission fluid in. Make sure the container has not come in contact with any other liquids, including other motor oils, water, bleach, paint, pesticides or other chemical agents.
- 2). Pour the transmission fluid carefully into the sealable container using a funnel. Tighten the lid to make sure there's no spillage. Transmission fluid can be harmful to the environment and wildlife, so use extra caution while transporting so you don't spill any.
- 3). Locate a local recycling center that accepts transmission fluid. You can also check with auto repair shops, hazardous waste facilities and vehicle dealerships. For a list of recyclers near you that accept transmission fluid, use online resources, such as Earth 911, or find auto repair shops by going to the Best Auto Shops website (see Resources).
- 4). Transport the container of transmission fluid to the recycler you found. Be careful while transporting so that none of the fluid leaks and the container is not spilled or damaged. Ask that your container be returned to you so you can continue to use it to recycle your transmission fluid. Remember not to use the container for any other liquids.
