- 1). Raise the hood of your Probe. Remove the bolt securing the negative battery cable with a socket and ratchet. Remove the cable from the terminal.
- 2). Lift the clips securing the air cleaner cover. Remove the cover and lift the air cleaner out of the assembly. Remove the hose clamp with a pair of pliers. Disconnect the hose from the air cleaner assembly. Remove the mounting screws from the base of the air cleaner with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the air cleaner assembly off the engine.
- 3). Remove the upper mounting bolts from the starter with a socket and ratchet. Raise the front of the car with a jack and place jack stands under the car. Slide under the car and remove the bolts securing the starter wires using a socket and ratchet. Remove the wires from their posts.
- 4). Remove the lower mounting bolts from the starter with a socket and ratchet. Support the starter body while you remove the lower bolts. The starter is heavy, and may injure you if it falls. Remove the starter body from the engine compartment.
- 5). Position the new starter and insert the lower mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 33 ft-lbs. with your torque wrench. Reconnect the two starter wires, attaching the retaining nuts and tightening them with a socket and ratchet.
- 6). Raise the car with a jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground to access the engine compartment. Insert the upper mounting bolts, working from the top of the engine compartment. Torque the bolts to 38 ft-lbs. with your torque wrench. Attach the lower air cleaner assembly and insert the air cleaner. Replace the top of the air cleaner assembly and flip the locking tabs down. Attach the intake hose and replace the hose clamp, tightening it with a pair of pliers.
- 7). Reconnect the negative cable to the battery. Close the hood and start the engine to test the starter.
