How to Change a Cam Position Sensor

    • 1). Loosen the negative battery cable of your truck or car. Pull the negative battery cable off your battery's negative post. It will be marked with a "-" sign.

    • 2). Jack up the front end of your car or truck and set the jack stands under the front frame for support. Also engage your emergency brake.

    • 3). Determine your wiring setup to the crankshaft. On some vehicles, a wiring harness is plugged into the back of the crankshaft sensor. However, others may have three separate wires that run from the back of it. If you have a wiring harness, simply unplug it from the back of the sensor by hand. If you have three wires, use your socket set to loosen the connections and note which wires lead to which terminals on the sensor. Mark them, if necessary with paper or tape.

    • 4). Unbolt the sensor from the side of your engine where it is mounted. Use you socket set to do this. Slip the socket on the retaining bolt and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. Thread the new sensor into the socket and tighten it down with your socket set.

    • 5). Replace the wiring harness or re-fasten the three terminal connectors to the new sensor.

    • 6). Lower your car or truck down from the jack stands and jack and replace your negative battery cable.
