- 1). Disconnect the battery on the pickup truck. This step is essential. If you do not disconnect the battery, removing the steering wheel will cause the vehicle's airbags to deploy and you could be seriously injured. Use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative cable from the battery, which is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment.
- 2). Wait five minutes to allow the airbags to deactivate. Then, remove the two screws from the back of the steering wheel. Remove the steering wheel cover. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees and insert a screwdriver into the two holes behind the steering wheel. This will disengage the securing clips of the airbag. Remove the airbag from the steering wheel and unplug the electrical connector. Pull the airbag out of the vehicle.
- 3). Remove the horn-button covering cap with a flat-head screwdriver. Unplug the electrical connector from the horn-button covering cap and remove the covering cap from the vehicle.
- 4). Remove the snap ring from the steering column by prying it off with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the nut from the rear of the steering wheel with a socket wrench and pull the steering wheel out of the vehicle.
- 5). Remove the trim cover around the steering column by popping it out with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the upper shroud of the steering column. This will reveal the lock-plate. Use a lock-plate removal tool to release the lock-plate and remove it from the steering column.
- 6). Remove the blinker lever's retaining screw and unplug its electrical-connector. Pull the blinker lever out of the steering column and replace if necessary.
