Town & Country Rear Hatch Won't Open

    • 1). Gain access to the rear of the van. This may require you to climb over the back seat.

    • 2). Remove the screws on either side of the handle on the inside of the rear hatch. Place the screws in your pocket so you don't lose them. Gently pull the handle out of the rear panel.

    • 3). Reach in the hole the removed handle created and lift the latch manually so the hatch can open. Allow the hatch to open fully.

    • 4). Remove the screws on the side of the rear hatch panel that are holding it in place. Be careful not to lose the screws so that you can reassemble the rear hatch later. Set the panel aside.

    • 5). Look at the latch assembly and use the drill to remove the screws securing the latch to the bottom of the hatch door. Disconnect the cable attached to the outside hatch handle.

    • 6). Position the new latch and secure it in place by reinserting the screws into the mounting holes. Attach the new cable to the outside handle and use the included cable clamp to secure the end of the cable in place.

    • 7). Slowly close the hatch until it is almost shut and check that the latch will hit the striker at the bottom of the hatch correctly. There is some room for the latch to slide to the left or right with the mounting holes. If the latch needs to be adjusted, then loosen the screws slightly and nudge the latch in the correct direction and then retighten the screws.

    • 8). Reattach the panel and inside handle to the rear hatch door with the screws that were previously removed.
