How to Sew Insulated Roman Shades

    • 1). Measure the shade length from the hanging brackets to the bottom of the window's edge. Add 4 inches to this measurement. Measure the shade's width from one side of the window to the other. Add 1 inch to the measurement. Use the measurements to buy front and back shade fabric and the shade's interior batting.

    • 2). If necessary, cut the front fabric, batting and backing fabric to the length and width measurements. Sandwich the layers together by placing the backing fabric with the right side down on a flat surface. Lie the batting on top of the backing, followed by the front fabric with its right side up.

    • 3). Pin the layers to hold them together. Make a vertical line 2 inches in from each side. Mark additional interior vertical lines evenly across so they are about 12 inches apart. Sew along the lines to hold all three layers together.

    • 4). Measure the length of each sewn vertical line. This is the amount of blind tape that will be needed to complete the shade. Add 1 inch to the measurement and cut the blind tape to this length. Pin the blind tape over the vertical stitching, turning each end under by half an inch to create a clean edge.

    • 5). Sew the blind tape to the shade fabric by hand with a thread and needle. You can sew the tape with a sewing machine, but the stitching will show on the front of the insulated shade and might not match with the quilting stitches.

    • 6). Sew a 3/4-inch double-folded bias tape around the shade by placing the three layers of fabric inside the folded tape. Sew close to the inside edge to hold and complete the edge.

    • 7). Cut a hanging board to attach the shade above a window that is 1 inch deep, 2 inches thick and to the width of the window. Screw the eyehooks into the board at the same location of the blind tape loops.

    • 8). Cut the blind cording to the length indicated on the packaging for the window length. Tie one cord to the bottom loop of each vertical length of tape. Thread the cording vertically through the loops and the eyehook on the hanging board. Repeat with all cords.

    • 9). Thread all the blind cords through the eyehooks toward the side of the window you want them to hang. Knot the cords together at the bottom and cut off any excess cord.

    • 10

Screw two to three L-brackets over the window and attach the hanging board and shade to the brackets.
