How to Remove Shackles From a 1968 Mustang

    • 1). Raise the rear of the vehicle underneath the center of the differential with a jack only until the rear tires lift off the ground.

    • 2). Position a jack stand underneath the back of the frame rail that runs along each side of the Mustang.

    • 3). Lower the Mustang onto the jack stands. Ensure that the Mustang is stable on the stands, as the entire weight of the vehicle will rest on the stands when the shackles are removed.

    • 4). Remove both rear tires with a lug nut wrench.

    • 5). Raise the jack against the bottom of the differential to support its weight.

    • 6). Remove the shackles. Each shackle is held in place with two bolt and nut combination. The upper bolt of each shackle secures the shackle to the frame, while the lower bolt secures the shackle to the tip of the leaf spring. Remove both nuts on each shackle with a wrench, then tap the end of each bolt out of the shackle with a hammer. Pull each side of the shackle off the leaf spring.
