How to Replace Valve Gaskets

    • 1). Unhook the wiring harness from any retainers on the valve covers. Pull the PCV valve out of the top of the valve cover and set it aside. If the spark plug wires have retainers attached to the valve covers, pull the wires out of the retainers, but do not remove the spark plug wires.

    • 2). Unbolt and remove the valve covers, using the appropriate socket. Clean the mating surface of the valve cover and the head of all gasket residue, using the screwdriver or scraper.

    • 3). Smear a thin layer of silicone gasket maker on the valve-cover mating surface. Allow it to set for one minute. Fit the valve-cover gasket to the valve cover, making sure that the bolt holes in the cover and the gasket are lined up. Allow it to set for five minutes.

    • 4). Place the valve cover on the head, making sure that no wires are caught between the cover and the head. Insert the valve-cover retaining bolts and tighten them snugly. Do not overtighten them or you will squish the gasket out, and it will leak.

    • 5). Replace any wiring harness retainers and reinsert the harness or the spark plug wires on their retainers. Start the vehicle and check for oil leaks around the new gasket.
