How to Create a Windows XP Home Startup Floppy Disk

    • 1). Turn on the computer, allowing it to completely start.

    • 2). Insert the black floppy disk into the floppy drive.

    • 3). Click "Start" and select "Run." Type "format a:", without quotes, into the dialog box and press enter. Wait for the format to finish.

    • 4). Open the CD-ROM tray and insert the Windows XP Home CD. Close any programs that may start from the CD.

    • 5). Click "Start" and navigate to "My Computer." Right-click on the CD-ROM drive with the Windows XP Home CD and select "Explore."

    • 6). Open the I386 folder. Locate the file "Ntldr." Right-click on the file, select "Send To" and choose "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)." Repeat this process for the file "Ntdetect.com."

    • 7). Click "Start" and select "Run." Type "notepad" into the dialog box and press enter.

    • 8). Type the following text into Notepad:

      [boot loader]

      timeout=30

      Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows

      [operating systems]

      multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Microsoft Windows XP Home"

    • 9). Select "File" from the menu bar and choose "Save As...". Name the file "boot.ini" and save on 31/2 Floppy (A:).
