Tighten the jaws of a pair of round-jaw vise grips around the oil drain bolt head. When tightening, place the side of the vise grips even with the drain pan. You grab the bolt head just as you would a wrench. Adjust the jaws so that you have to use some force to lock the vise grips around the bolt head.

    • 2). Pull up as you turn the bolt head counter-clockwise with the vise grips. If necessary, tap the vise grip handle with a hammer to aid in turning the bolt.

    • 3). Insert the blade of a flat head screwdriver between the oil pan and the bottom of the oil drain bolt head when there is enough room. Use the screwdriver to help lift the bolt while you turn the bolt counter-clockwise until it comes free from the drain pan.
