How to Paint Your Car With Aerosol Paint

    • 1). Sketch the paint style and color choices for your car.

    • 2). Purchase an aerosol spray paint (such as Automotive Touchup paint).

    • 3). Clean the area with dish soap, water, and a soft sponge.

    • 4). Dry the area and use prep solvent and a towel to remove wax and oil from the surface.

    • 5). Use 180-320 grit sandpaper to hand-sand rust, scratches, or surface damage. Use 600 grit wet sandpaper to sand the area you will be painting, which should be dull and smooth.

    • 6). Use 3M automotive grade masking tape (3/4") along adjacent panels to prevent overspray.

    • 7). Prime the surface. Use plastic parts adhesion promoter over bare plastic. Use aerosol primer spray paint over clean sanded metal. Paint three or more coats, waiting five to 10 minutes between coats.

    • 8). Sand the primer with 600 grit wet sandpaper.

    • 9). Use water to clean off sanding dust and then dry the area.

      Spray aerosol base coat paint. Apply as many coats as necessary, waiting five to 10 minutes between each coat.

      Wait 30 minutes and apply a clear coat. Apply three to four coats and wait five to 10 minutes between coats.
