How to Repair an Auto Body Panel

    • 1). Use the 180-grit sandpaper to sand the paint away from the dented or dinged area. Sand inside the dent and up to 3 inches around the dent. Sand until the area is dull and most of the paint is removed.

    • 2). Apply several layers of body filler to the dent by spreading and smoothing the filler with a plastic squeegee. The surface of the filler should be higher than the surrounding body panel. Allow the filler to dry for two hours.

    • 3). Sand the dried filler using the 220-grit sandpaper. Sand until the filler is smooth and even with the surrounding surface of the body panel. Wipe the body panel down with wax and grease remover using a microfiber towel. This removes all sanding dust, oil from fingerprints and any other contaminants that may ruin the paint.

    • 4). Place masking tape and paper around the repaired area. Spray one thick coat of primer over the area that has been sanded and filled. Allow the primer to dry for 30 minutes.

    • 5). Spray three thin coats of paint over the primer, allowing the paint to dry for 15 minutes between coats. Spray three thin coats of clear coat paint over the paint, also allowing each of these coats 15 minutes to dry. Remove the masking tape and paper. Wait 24 hours before handling the panel.
