How to Read the Oil Dipstick in a Geo Metro

    • 1). Park your Geo Metro on a level surface and wait a few minutes but not too long. You want to avoid waiting too long after the engine is shut off because the oil needs to be warm for accurate readings, but you also want to give it enough time for the oil to drain into the oil pan after running.

    • 2). Open your hood and look for the engine oil dipstick. It is on the front passenger side of the engine compartment and has a looped handle.

    • 3). Loop your finger through the handle at the top and gently pull the Geo Metro dipstick out of its sheath. Use a lint-free rag or tissue to wipe it clean.

    • 4). Notice the marks on the dipstick. These mark the safety zone for the safe running of your engine.

    • 5). Slip the dipstick back into the sheath and pull it out immediately to get a clear reading. Check the oil level on the dipstick without wiping it off.

    • 6). Make sure the oil level mark is within the safe range on the dipstick. If it is over the top of the safe marks, you need to drain some oil out; if it is at or below the safe marks, you need to add oil and re-check until the oil level lies in the safe range.
