How to Change Oil for a 1999 Suzuki Katana

    • 1). Place the motorcycle on its center stand and start the motorcycle, allowing it to run for five minutes to warm the engine's oil. Stop the engine and turn off the ignition switch once the motorcycle has warmed to its standard operating temperature.

    • 2). Remove the lower fairing from the motorcycle. Each side of the fairing is secured by five Phillips screws and an Allen head bolt. Remove these screws and bolts using a Phillips screwdriver and an Allen key. Lower the fairing to the ground and slide it out from under the motorcycle.

    • 3). Remove the oil filler lid from the right side of the motorcycle. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the filler lid's mounting bolt and pull the lid away from the motorcycle. Unscrew the oil filler cap from the engine and set it aside.

    • 4). Place an oil pan beneath the engine's oil drain plug. The drain plug is located on the right side of the motor's crankcase. Remove the drain plug with a wrench and allow the oil to drain completely. Replace the drain plug once the flow of oil has reduced to a thin trickle.

    • 5). Move your oil pan to the front of the motor and place it directly beneath the oil filter. Using a cap-type oil filter wrench, unscrew the oil filter and discard it. Allow any remaining oil to drain.

    • 6). Screw a new oil filter into place by hand until it is seated firmly against the motor. Wipe away any oil spills with a shop towel.

    • 7). Add oil into the motor through the oil filler. Using a funnel to prevent spills, pour up to 3.1 quarts of oil into the motor. Wipe away any spills with a shop towel and replace the oil filler cap.

    • 8). Reinstall the lower fairing, sliding it under the motorcycle and lifting it into position. Secure the fairing to the motorcycle by reinstalling the five Phillips screws followed by the single Allen bolt on each side.
