How to Check Primary Oil on a 2003 Harley

    • 1). Use a Torx driver to remove the bolts that secure the round derby cover to the primary cover on the left side of your 2003 Harley. Set the derby cover inside.

    • 2). Push the motorcycle into an upright position and look into the primary cover through the derby cover port. The primary fluid should be at the lower edge of the circular clutch diaphragm spring. Use a flashlight if necessary.

    • 3). Take note of the level and condition of the fluid. If the fluid appears dirty or smells burnt, drain the fluid into an oil pan by removing the drain plug bolt below the derby cover port. Once the fluid has drained, replace the drain plug O-ring and install the drain plug.

    • 4). Fill the primary with fluid until the fluid is touching the lower edge of the clutch diaphragm spring.

    • 5). Reinstall the derby cover and wipe away any spilled primary fluid with a shop towel.
