- 1). Release the primary hood latch by pulling the release lever under the steering wheel. Slide your hand between the hood and the grill. You will feel a release latch. Pull it toward you. This will release the secondary latch which enables you to lift up the hood. Secure the hood by using the safety bar.
- 2). Remove the negative battery cable by loosening the clamp screw with an adjustable wrench. Slide the cable up off of the battery post. Wrap a towel around the clamp and set it down. The towel ensures that the clamp doesn't touch anything that will cause a short.
- 3). Leave the negative battery cable off for a minimum of ten minutes. This will reset the computer which will turn off the check engine light temporarily.
- 4). Replace the negative battery cable after taking off the towel. Make sure that you tighten the screw to keep the clamp securely attached to the battery post.
- 5). Lower the security bar and close the hood. Start the engine and make sure that the check engine light is off. If the light comes back on, which may happen after five starts, you should have a diagnostic test run. Many auto parts will do this for free.
