- 1). Examine the way that the belt is routed around the pulleys and locate the routing guide in your car's repair manual or on the decal under the hood. The serpentine belt will only work properly if it is routed correctly.
- 2). Locate the belt tensioner, below and just to the left of the A/C compressor, and slip a 16 mm wrench onto the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Rotate the belt tensioner counterclockwise to release the tension on the belt. While holding the tensioner with the wrench, slip the belt off of the alternator pulley located on the upper left of the engine. Release the tensioner and remove the wrench. Slip the belt off the remaining pulleys and out of the engine compartment.
- 3). Slip the new belt around the crankshaft pulley (the lowest belt in the center of the engine), the power steering pulley (located to the right of the crankshaft pulley) and the alternator pulley (the top right pulley). Pass the right side of the belt under the idler pulley (located to the left of the alternator pulley) and the left side of the belt under and around the water pump pulley (located above the crankshaft pulley). Slip the remaining portion of the belt over the A/C compressor pulley. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.
- 4). Check the belt position on all of the pulleys and make sure it is laying flat on the pulleys. Start the engine and check for misalignment of the belt.
