- Microsoft's Windows operating systems include administrator tool packages for advanced users such as system administrators. The tools are located in the Control Panel area and include many different utilities for error logging, disk management, printer management and other tasks. Administrator tools provide a powerful way to work with the Windows operating system.
- There are two different management tools in Windows 7: computer management and print management. Computer management provides utilities for tweaking system performance, managing hard drives on the system, setting Windows Management Instrumentation Control options and managing shared files. The print management tool monitors local and network printer queues, sends notifications whenever there is a printing error, and provides easy access to all printers from one panel.
- Remote server administration is used by system and network administrators. This tool allows an administrator to manage servers running Windows 2008 R2 and 2003. This tool gives administrators an option from working off of one computer to manage all servers. This is especially helpful for businesses that have many different physical server locations.
- The largest amount of administrator tools either monitor parts of the system or diagnose problems. The Event Viewer is a monitoring utility that Windows reports to when services start and stop, programs crash or the computer detects errors among problems and device drivers. Windows stores the information in a log file that is accessed via Event Viewer. The Device Management provides a user with information on all hardware installed on the computer. Drivers can be troubleshot or updated through this panel. The performance monitor displays a number of data categories including CPU usage, disk usage and modules. Windows 7 includes a memory diagnostic tool that picks up any issues with the system memory.
