How to Remove an Automatic Belt Tensioner

    • 1). Pop the hood. Locate the belt tensioner, which is a round pulley that sits on an arm that bolts to the engine. This is typically on the top half of the engine block for accessibility.

    • 2). Insert the head of the 3/8-inch breaker bar into the square hole on the belt tensioner. Turn the breaker bar counterclockwise to loosen tension on the belt. Pull the belt off the tensioner and remaining pulleys.

    • 3). Unbolt the automatic belt tensioner from the engine block using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take the tensioner away from the engine.
