How to Install a Belt on a 1997 Buick

    • 1). Open the Buick's hood and support it with the prop rod if necessary. Examine the Buick's belt routing diagram sticker, placed on the fan shroud. This sticker provides crucial information such as automatic belt tensioner location and proper belt routing.

    • 2). Rotate the automatic belt tensioner away from the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt off one or more of the upper pulleys with your free hand before slowly rotating the automatic belt tensioner back into position.

    • 3). Remove the Buick's old belt from the remaining pulleys and then out of the engine bay by hand. Loop the new belt around the bottom of the Buick's crankshaft pulley.

    • 4). Follow your Buick's specific belt routing diagram to route the belt around the remaining engine accessory pulleys, before arriving at the automatic belt tensioner pulley.

    • 5). Rotate the Buick's automatic belt tensioner aside once more with the belt tensioner tool. Slide the belt onto the tensioner and slowly rotate the tensioner back into place. Remove the tool and close the Buick's hood.
