- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are pointing forward. Turn the key to the “Lock” position. Pull the airbag fuse (SIR fuse) from the fuse panel using the needle nose pliers. The fuse panel is located under the dash to the left of the steering wheel. The fuse panel cover diagram shows you which fuse controls the airbag system.
- 2). Remove the left trim panel. If it is not screwed on, it has plastic retainers that just pull out. Unbolt the connector position assurance device. Unplug the yellow SIR harness connector from the base of the steering column.
- 3). Unbolt and remove the left instrument panel insulator, instrument panel drive knee bolster and the deflector using the appropriate sockets. Double check that the steering column is locked and the key lock cylinder is in the “Lock” position.
- 4). Remove the upper support nuts for the steering column from the column support. Lower the steering column. Unplug the ignition switch and dimmer switch connectors. Remove the dimmer switch actuator rod using the appropriate socket. Unbolt and remove the dimmer switch using the appropriate sockets.
- 5). Unscrew the ignition switch actuator rod retaining bolt and pull the rod out. Remove the ignition switch using the appropriate socket. Remove the park lock cable if your car has an automatic transmission.
- 6). Install the new ignition switch using the appropriate sockets. Reinstall the automatic transmission park lock cable, if applicable. Check that the ignition switch is in the lock position by moving the switch glider all the way to the right, then back to the left for one detent (you will feel it snap into the detent).
- 7). Reinstall the ignition switch actuator rod, dimmer switch and dimmer switch actuating rod using the appropriate sockets. Attach the electrical connectors. Raise the steering column and reinstall the support nuts.
- 8). Reconnect the yellow, two-way connector for the SIR airbag system. Reinstall the connector position assurance device and the trim panels. Plug the airbag fuse back into the fuse box. Turn the ignition key to the “Run” position and count the airbag light flashes. It should flash seven to nine times, then turn off. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
