Can I Use a 12-Volt Battery on 6-Volt Ignition System?

    Jump Starting

    • Six-volt ignition systems can be jump-started with a 12-volt battery. Clean the spark plugs first for a faster start. Turn off all lights, radios and other electrical accessories to protect them from burnout.

    Permanent Use

    • Installation of a 12-volt battery in a 6-volt system is not advisable. Any electrical accessories will burn out. Even the starter will burn out under prolonged cranking.

    Alternatives

    • If a new battery is needed for a 6-volt ignition system, check out golf cart batteries. Many carts are powered by 6-volt motors, and the battery could work for a 6-volt system. Many antique automobile restorers will refit the car with 12-volt ignition and accessories.
