- 1). Type "reg/?" (without the quotation marks) at the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. A list of options and command syntax will be printed to the screen. Commands must be entered using the exact syntax given in the examples.
- 2). Inspect a specific registry entry by typing: "reg QUERY HKLM\SubKeyName" without the quotes. The first two words in this command are the name of the program file and the mode of operation for the program. You are telling the operating system to open the registry in "Query" mode. The third item you type in is the name of the root key. HKLM points to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, the main entry that controls your computer's operation. Entering a subkey name after a backslash will print the values in the registry under that subkey.
- 3). Add a registry entry by typing, without quotes: "reg ADD HKLM\SubKeyName /v ValueName /t DataType /d DataValue." This opens the reg program in "Add" mode and inserts the subkey name with the value name following the /v switch, the data type following the /t switch and the value following the /d switch.
- 4). Delete a registry entry by typing, without quotes: "reg DELETE HKLM\SubKeyName /v ValueName." Entering this command string opens the reg program in "Delete" mode and removes the key name following the /v switch from the registry.
