How to Reinstall Winsrv on an Inspiron With Windows XP

    • 1). Insert your Dell Inspiron System Restore Disk in your CD-ROM drive and reboot your computer by clicking on "Start," and then select "Restart." If you computer will not restart, insert the disk, and press and hold the power button to manually shut you computer down. Press the power button again to restart.

    • 2). Press "F12" 10 times quickly as your computer goes through its boot routine. You'll see a menu of options. Choose "CD-ROM" from the options screen.

    • 3). Choose to "Repair a Windows Installation" by pressing "R" to enter the Recovery Console.

      You should be at a command prompt in the directory "D:\Windows\System32." If not type "CD D:\Windows\System32" and press "Enter" to change to that directory. If your CD drive isn't D:, use your CD drive letter in place of D:.

    • 4). Type "dir" and press "Enter" to list all files in the directory. Scroll through the list to be sure "winsrv.dll" is listed.

    • 5). Type "copy d:\windows\system32\winsrv.dll c:\windows\system32\winsrv.dll" and press "Enter" to copy winsrv.dll to your Windows XP system. If your CD drive isn't D:, use the correct drive letter in place of D:.

    • 6). Type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart your computer.
