- 1). Open the Start menu and type "regedit" in the search field at the bottom. Press "Enter." Windows open the Registry Editor application.
- 2). Click the triangle-shaped icons on the left side of the window to browse to the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," then "SYSTEM," then "CurrentControlSet," then "Control" and then "FileSystem" folders.
- 3). Right-click the "FileSystem" folder and select "New" and "DWORD (32-bit) Value." A new blank registry entry appears on the right side of the window.
- 4). Type the name "NtfsMftZoneReservation" and press "Enter" to create the new registry entry.
- 5). Double-click "NtfsMftZoneReservation" on the right side of the screen to edit it.
- 6). Type a value between "1" and "4" in the "Value Data" box, and click "OK." A higher value increases the space reserved for the MFT by a greater amount, but it also reduces the amount of space that will remain on the drive for file storage.
- 7). Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.
