How to Change a Headlight in a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle

    • 1). Turn off your Beetle and prop open the hood.

    • 2). Locate the lever and tab on the side of the headlight assembly. The tab has cross marks on it for identification.

    • 3). Depress the tab inward with force. Pull up on the lever until it cannot be raised any higher. Press the tab down with a screwdriver if you can't apply enough force with your hand.

    • 4). Pull the headlight backward--away from the front of the car--while the lever is in the upmost position. The headlight should slide backward on its grooves. If it doesn't, spray lubricant around the bottom of the headlight assembly and try again.

    • 5). Depress the metal clip holding the rear weather cover in place on the assembly and pull the cover off.

    • 6). Remove the wiring plug from the socket by pressing in the clips on the side of the plug.

    • 7). Pull the locking clip holding the bulb into the socket out of the socket and install the new bulb. Align the tab on the rear block of the new bulb with the indentation of the socket to set the bulb.

    • 8). Reattach the wiring plug to the socket and return the weather cover to its original position. Lubricate the sliding grooves and remount the headlight assembly onto them. Push the lever downward until you hear it click.
