- Click on "Start," "Control Panel" and then "Sound Devices." A window should populate containing your sound card settings. This window should have about six tabs. Under the Main tab, select the desired sound card device for both the recording and playback option. This will reassign your sound card as the default device that the computer will use. Restart your computer. If you're using plug-and-play audio hardware, you should remove its connection to avoid automatically reassigning your sound card settings at the restart your computer.
- Click on "Start," "Control Panel" and "Administrative Tasks." Under Administrative Tasks, click on "Device Manager." Under Device Manager, you will see a tree menu (a list that collapsed the shelves of folders). To collapse the list you need to click on the + on the side of the folder you want to select. Once you've found the folder that contains the Sound Card Device Driver, right-click on the "Sound Device Driver" and left click on "Properties." Under Properties you should see three tabs. The Main Tab should contain your device driver settings. Click by the driver option and click the "update driver" button. The driver should automatically update if you're running either Windows XP Professional Service Pack Three or Vista Service Pack One.
- Click on "Start" and "Run," then enter REGEDIT in the blank field to open the Registry Editor. Using the tree menu, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Current Control Set/Control/Class entry. Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and in the right-hand pane, click once---and only once---to select the Upper Filters entry. You should make sure the Upper Filters entry is highlighted, press "Delete," then click the "Yes" button. In the right-hand pane, click once---and only once---to select the Lower Filters entry. Make sure the Lower Filters entry is highlighted, press "Delete," then click the "Yes" option. At this point you can close the Registry Editor by clicking "File," then "Exit." Be sure to restart your computer after making changes in the registry.
