- 1). Park the Oldsmobile on a level surface and open the hood. Let the engine cool completely.
- 2). Grasp the radiator fill cap, push it down and turn it 1/2 revolution counterclockwise. Pull the radiator cap off and set it aside.
- 3). Pour a solution of 50 percent distilled water and 50 percent antifreeze (you can buy coolant already diluted with water, called "premixed") into the radiator fill opening. Fill the radiator to the bottom of the neck.
- 4). Add the water and antifreeze solution to the radiator expansion tank, to the "Cold" mark. The radiator expansion tank is a plastic overflow tank that connects to the radiator top by a small hose.
- 5). Turn the vehicle on and let it idle to achieve operating temperature. Observe the coolant in the radiator through the fill neck. As the engine warms, the thermostat will open and allow flow of the coolant to the engine. At this point, the coolant in the radiator will begin to circulate and expel air bubbles. The coolant level will drop in the radiator.
- 6). Grasp the upper radiator hose in one hand and squeeze it. This will force air bubbles out of the hose and into the radiator. Continue squeezing the hose until no more air bubbles are evident in the radiator neck. Repeat this process on the bottom radiator hose to purge it of air.
- 7). Add antifreeze solution to the radiator as the coolant level decreases. Continue adding coolant until the level remains constant at the top of the filler neck.
- 8). Turn the engine off and let the car cool. Replace the radiator cap by aligning the ears in the fill neck, pushing down and turning clockwise one-half revolution.
