- According to the HP Museum, pen plotters were the only mechanism available in the 1970s that could print high resolution graphics from a computer. Sold by Hewlett-Packard, the pen plotter sold well but did not make a lot of money for the company.
- Printing with a pen plotter was a very slow and arduous process. The pens also constantly ran out of ink and if you were part way through printing something and a pen ran out, you would have to start the entire project again.
- After 1987, new printer technology in printing made pen plotters obsolete. Since then, printers have become smaller and more economical with ink.
