What Is a Pen Plotter?

    History

    • According to the HP Museum, pen plotters were the only mechanism available in the 1970s that could print high resolution graphics from a computer. Sold by Hewlett-Packard, the pen plotter sold well but did not make a lot of money for the company.

    Significance

    • Printing with a pen plotter was a very slow and arduous process. The pens also constantly ran out of ink and if you were part way through printing something and a pen ran out, you would have to start the entire project again.

    Potential

    • After 1987, new printer technology in printing made pen plotters obsolete. Since then, printers have become smaller and more economical with ink.
