I like Mustad 92677 size 8/0 or 9/0 for catching amberjack.
Select the location you will try to catch amberjack from. Amberjack tend to like deep water in the 50-100 foot range. Look for area with structures such as ship wrecks, reefs, or dump sites to fish near. Local bait stores and local maps can provide this information. - 2
The weight will vary depending on water currents.
Construct the amberjack rig. Do this by tying the swivel to one end of the mono filament leader and the hook to the other end. Amberjack are very hard to fight and catch so make sure your knots are very secure. - 3). Slide the egg sinker onto the fishing line that is coming from your fishing reel.
- 4). Tie the amberjack rig you made in step 1 to the fishing line coming off of your fishing reel. When finished, the egg sinker should be able to slide up and down the line but not go past the swivel.

The best bait to catch big amberjack!
Select the bait you will use to catch amberjack. Moonfish are by far the best bait to catch the largest amberjack. They may be difficult to purchase or catch, but when they are available use them. Other baits that can be used are sardines, anchovies, and squid. - 6). Hook the bait on to your hook.
- 7). Let your line out until you feel the egg sinker hit the bottom. Now reel in the slack so that the bait is about 1 foot off of the bottom.
- 8). Wait for an amberjack to bite. Amberjack will take the bait witha lot of force so be prepared! When you feel the bite set the hook by pulling back on the rod with a lot of pressure.
- 9). Reel in the amberjack by pulling back on your fishing rod and then reeling in the slack. Repeat this process to catch the fish. This may take up to 1 hour so be prepared for a long fight!
