How to Set Up a Home Stereo Rack System

    • 1). Connect the components of your stereo rack system to the receiver. The receiver is the main part of your system; the "hub" of all of your components. The most efficient way to connect the components is through HDMI cabling. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cables offer the most pristine connection between components, thus delivering the clearest sound and picture. The HDMI cables are less complicated than RF (Radio Frequency) wires because they require only one connection versus the three or four for RF wiring. (RF wires are the group of three wires colored red, white, and yellow. HDMI is a single cable that connects HDMI-capable components together.)

    • 2). Arrange the components on shelving of your choice provided that it is sufficient in handling each component's weight. Leave at least two inches between the top of one component and the shelf holding another. This will allow for adequate ventilation as the components' lifespan can be greatly reduced by overheating.

    • 3). Connect the receiver to the speakers. Depending on the level of surround sound capabilities you are seeking, you should connect between two and eight different speakers including a subwoofer. The most common arrangement for listening to music as a primary function, is two speakers.

    • 4). Disable different speaker groups and play one single source of sound (like CD or radio) at a time. This will help you to isolate each speaker or speaker group so that you can effectively adjust the volume level of those speakers to your liking. Most quality receivers will have a clear option for speaker isolation. Choose between the "A" and "B" group of speakers, or scroll through the receiver's menu through the different speaker groups. If your receive does not have the ability to automatically isolate different speakers or speaker groups, you will have to manually disconnect the wires of the speakers you wish to mute.

    • 5). Program the universal remote to control the different components of your system. The process for programming most universal remote controls is as simple as entering a code for each component. The codes will be listed in the manual for the remote and grouped by manufacturer. You may have the ability to plug one or more components into the receiver itself for power. It is recommended that you not do so. A surge will affect your components separately if they are not connected for power. A surge protecting outlet is recommended for providing power to each part of your system.
