My Sony Vaio Won't Let Me Restore

    Enable System Restore in GPO

    • 1). Log into the system with an administrator account.

    • 2). Click the "Start" orb button, type "gpedit.msc" in the "Start Search" field and press "Enter" (for Windows Vista and 7 users). Click "Start" and click "Run." Type "gpedit.msc" in the provided text field. Press "Enter" (for Windows XP/2000/98 users).

    • 3). Expand "Computer Configuration," "Administrative Templates," "System" and "System Restore." Double-click the "Turn off System Restore" setting on the right pane. Choose the "Disabled" option. Click "Apply" and "OK."

    • 4). Double-click the "Turn off Configuration" setting. Choose "Disabled." Click "Apply" and "OK."

    Verify System Restore is On

    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" menu. Click "Run." Type "compmgmt.msc" in the command line and press "Enter." The "Computer Management" window opens up.

    • 2). Expand "Services and Applications" on the left pane's tree console and click "Services." Click the "System Restore Services" item on the right pane, under the "Name" column.

    • 3). Verify the status for "System Restore Services" displays "Started," under the corresponding "Status" column. If status displays "Stopped," double-click "System Restore Services," click the "Start" button and click "OK."

    • 4). Right-click "My Computer" and choose "Properties." Select the "System Restore" tab. Ensure the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" option is not checked. If checked, uncheck this option, click "Apply" and "OK." The "Status" section will display "Monitoring" status for the drives where System Restore is currently running.

    Safe Mode

    • 1). Restart the computer and press the "F8" key repeatedly, before the Windows log-on screen displays. Choose "Safe Mode" and press "Enter."

    • 2). Log into the system with an account that has administrator privileges. Click "Start." Click "Run." Type "msconfig" in the command line and press "Enter."

    • 3). Select the "General" tab and click "Launch System Restore" button. Choose the "Restore my computer to an earlier time" option and click "Next." Choose a restore date and click "Next" again. Wait for the System Restore process to complete.
