Flies are a nuisance, especially in the summertime. It is frustrating to sit outside enjoying a nice day only to find flies swarming all around. Perhaps they have even invaded your home. You can buy commercial fly repellents; however, these products often contain harsh chemicals. Opt for a home remedy fly repellent to safely and naturally keep pesky flies away. - Put a few drops of eucalyptus oil onto small pieces of absorbent cloths and put them where you see a lot of flies. The scent of eucalyptus will deter the flies from that area. Replace the cloths every couple of days as the scent begins to diminish.
- Flies love garbage, so it is no wonder they often gravitate towards garbage cans and areas with a lot of trash. Sprinkle borax powder in the bottoms of your garbage cans to keep the flies away. Borax is a natural ingredient that is toxic to many insects and bugs, including flies.
- Flies are deterred by the smell of herbs, so plant some basil in pots to keep the flies at bay. Place the pots in various locations inside and outside of the home. Basil is inexpensive, so plant it in abundance to keep the flies away. You can also use this fragrant herb for cooking as well.
You can also put some ground or whole cloves, or some ground mint into a muslin bag and hang them in various places around the home to deter the flies. Pine-scented potpourri or a pine bough will also keep flies away. - Fly paper will lure the flies to the paper, then trap them there. To make homemade fly paper, cut five 2-inch strips from a brown paper bag. Mix ¼ cup of corn syrup and ½ cup of sugar in a bowl. Spread the mixture onto the strips of paper with a butter knife. Lay the strips in places where flies are bothersome. Replace the strips as they become filled with flies. You can also use a piece of string to hang the strips, then situate a bowl underneath to catch any drippings from the sugary mixture.
