The iPhone"s Music App: How to Customize The Menu Tabs

The iPhone's Built-in Music App

The music app that comes with the iPhone is the default player that most users turn to when playing digital music on their iOS device. It gives you access to all your songs, albums, and playlists via a convenient menu tab at the bottom of the screen.

However, do you often find yourself having to tap the More button to see the options you really need?

As you've probably seen in the music app there are four options running from left to right.

By default these are: playlists, artists, songs, and albums. However, if you need to browse your library in another way (by genre for example), then you'll need to use the More option to get to it. Similarly, if you use iTunes Radio quite frequently then you will also need to use this extra sub-menu.

To start customizing the music app's toolbar, follow the steps below.

Customizing Tabs on The Music App's Interface

  1. If the Music app isn't already running, launch it from the iPhone's home screen.
  2. To get to the customizing menu you will need to tap on the More tab. This is located in the bottom right-hand corner on the screen.
  3. To start customizing, tap on the Edit button which is found in the top left-hand corner of the screen.
  4. You'll now see in the upper part of the screen all the options available that can be added to the Music app's toolbar. Some of these will already be in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen so take a few moments to decide which ones you want displayed.
  5. If for example you want to add the Genre option, hold your finger over the icon (image of a guitar) and drag it down to the menu tab -- you'll also have to decide at this point which tab to swap it for as only four tabs can be displayed at any one time.

  1. To add more options to the menu tab, repeat step 5.
  2. While in edit mode you can also re-arrange the tabs in the toolbar. You might for instance think that the song tab would be much better sitting next to the playlists option. Whatever your preference you can move tabs around on the toolbar by simply dragging and dropping them until you're happy with the arrangement.
  3. When you've finished customizing the music app's tab menu, tap on the Done button.
