- Relaxers contain numerous harsh chemicals that work to straighten hair that is curly or hard. However, a base coat such as store-bought cream or petroleum jelly has to be applied to prevent burns and other injuries. Before the hair is relaxed, base should be applied around the entire head at the hairline. More base is needed on the back of the neck and on the tip of the ears.
- Base should be applied on skin to prevent burning and scabs. However, base should never touch hair that is going to be relaxed. If base gets onto the hair, the relaxer will not be able to straighten that area. Base should be applied heavily, making sure that it touches only the scalp and outer areas of the head. Use a thin comb or dye brush to apply the base.
- Apply heavy amounts of base on the scalp and around the edges of the head. Take care to cover any area that may come in contact with the harsh relaxer. However, use caution and make sure that the base does not come in direct connect with hair.
