Homemade Brook Trout Lures

    Forming the lure

    • Cut a 5-inch length of stainless steel wire. Form a closed loop in the end using needle-nose pliers. Wrap the wire around itself to form a loop that will not open. The closed loop holds the spinner body in place. Mount the spinner body by sliding it onto the wire, down to the closed loop. Place the clevis pin through the hole in the spinner blade. Slide both ends of the clevis pin onto the wire, down against the spinner body. Make another closed loop, using needle-nose pliers, in the front end of the wire, close to the clevis pin. Wrap this loop firmly as before. Open the split-ring using the split-ring pliers. Slide the split-ring onto the wire loop closest to the spinner body. Slide a treble hook onto the split-ring using the split-ring pliers.

    Start with a kit

    • Kits are offered by several manufacturers. Some kits include all tools and materials such as stainless steel wire, cutting pliers, a wire forming tool, split-rings, spinner blades, spinner bodies, treble hooks, clevis pins, needle-nose pliers and split-ring pliers. Choose a kit with smaller spinner bodies and spinner blades. These will be sized properly for making homemade brook trout lures. Make your selection from among the many colors and materials available. Some spinner bodies and blades are brass or steel. Some are polished, some are hammered. Some colors include brass, silver, gold and black. Treble hooks also come in many sizes. Sizes 10, 12 and 14 are best for small brook trout lures.
