- An RFC standards document is entitled with the letters "RFC" followed by a serial number. These numbers are issued by the RFC Editor. RFC Editor is a group based at the Information Sciences Institute (ISI) in Marina Del Rey, California. ISI is an institute of the University of Southern California.
- An Internet draft is the preliminary RFC. This is the real "request for comments" as, at this point, experts are asked for their assessment of the idea. An Internet draft expires after three months. The authors are expected to take account of any opinions received and submit the document as an RFC. Not all protocols are accepted to be published as an RFC. Not all RFCs are protocols.
- Once an RFC has been published it cannot be changed. If errors exist, a new RFC is written that makes the erroneous RFC obsolete.
