There was some research carried out in the late 19th century into the behaviour of frogs. The scientists found that a frog would sit in a pan of cold water, but if you put them into a pan of boiling water, then the frog would jump right out. However, if they put the frog into a pan of cold water and then heated it up to boiling point, the frog would just sit there and get cooked.

Great story - how does that help me lose weight? Here's the thing - right now, your body is in the pan of cold water. You have some weight to lose, you know you should, but there's no heat - so there's no fight - your body just stays exactly where it is and you don't try to change your habits.

Suddenly - you go on a new diet and exercise regime. Now you've just dropped your body into a big pan of boiling water and all your habits and every fiber of your being is going to SCREAM, and try to jump out of that pan! Is it any surprise that so many diets fail in the first couple of weeks? The problem is that we all want fast results, so we throw everything at our bodies at the same time - but you have to have nerves of steel to keep to a plan started like that, much less keep the weight off long term.

So choose the third option. Turn the heat up slowly. This week - why not just start swapping sodas for water? Then next week, maybe start some gentle exercise a couple of times. Now you are turning up the heat gently and, instead of fighting your body and your habits head on, you are seducing them into a healthier lifestyle. I have to warn you - this is addictive! After a while, you will have so many good habits, and so few bad habits - you'll just have to put up with being the slimmest, healthiest you that you've ever been!
