How to Prevent Puffy Swollen Eyes

    • 1). Hydrate yourself:

If you feel thirsty your body is already showing signs of dehydration. It is important to stay properly hydrated to prevent puffy swollen eyes, not to mention all the other health benefits you receive from drinking water.
As a quick rule of thumb if your urine is not clear you may not be getting enough water. Try to increase your water intake each day by replacing one sugary drink with one cup of water. Slowly increasing your water intake will help you stay on track and avoid the sugar and caffeine withdrawal symptoms if you are a heavy pop drinker. Your goal should be eight glass of water each day. This is the easiest way to reduce puffy eyes before they become puffy.

    • 2). Watch what you eat:

When you eat make sure you are avoiding or at least limiting the amount of salt in your diet. Not only will lower salt intake help make you a healthier person it also helps you prevent puffy swollen eyes. The salt in your body collects in fluids, when these fluids collect around your eyes it causes your eyes to swell and look puffy.

    • 3). Clean your face:

You should wash your face at least twice a day; morning and night. It is also a good idea to wash your face after you exercise or work up a sweat. A clean face is less likely to have irritations enter your eye that could cause it to become puffy. Also, any make up around your eyes should be completely removed before going to bed and change your pillow case on a regular basis to avoid unseen objects from getting into your eyes while you are sleeping. Those little pieces of mascara can cause swollen eyelids when they flake off your lashes at night.

    • 4). Get new Make up and Contact lens solution:

Change out all eye make up and contact lens solutions on a regular basis. Follow directions by the manufacturer, if not specified change them out every couple of months. If you have any irritation to your eyes you should also purchase new eye make up and contact lens solutions. Better safe than sorry and these types of products can be a play ground for bacteria.

    • 5). Sleep:

You should make sure you are getting enough sleep. If you constantly wake up tired you're probably not getting enough sleep and this will definitely contribute to puffy swollen eyes. When you start feeling tired try not to push it, you should always listen to your body. If you notice eye strain due to lack of sleep avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. This causes strain on the thin tissue around your eyes and can very easily get particles of dirt from your hand trapped under your eyelids. This will cause your eyes to become puffy very quickly.

    • 6). Use a good pillow:

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated will decrease the amount of fluids that collect around your eyes. With your head elevated your circulation will be better and your eyes will be less likely to be puffy and swollen. Sleeping on your back also helps reduce swollen eyes, this will allow gravity to pull the fluids away from your eyes which again will reduce the puffy swollen eyes you are use to seeing in the morning mirror.
