- 1). Call your local cable company to activate your television subscription. Many cable companies will offer free installation as part of a cable subscription service. Determine the type of service package you would like to purchase. Inquire about discounts and other promotional rates. If your cable company will not install cable, or if you wish to add cable on a new television, you can install the cable yourself.
- 2). Attach a coaxial cable to the port from the external line. If you wish to add multiple devices, attach a splitter where you wish to branch off to new lines. Determine the number of devices onto which you want to install cable and purchase the appropriate splitter. All the devices are sharing a single cable line. Therefore, the more devices you attach, the lower your quality per device may be.
- 3). Run the cable line to the television you wish to activate. Make sure that your coaxial cable is long enough to traverse the distance with some slack. If you wish to hide your cable line, run it around the perimeter. You may hide it under the carpet by using needle-nose pliers and pulling up the edges of the carpet. Tuck the wire between the carpet board and the wall and reattach the carpet by pressing it firmly into the carpet board with the needle-nose pliers.
- 4). Connect the coaxial cable to the digital converter box --- which, because of new broadcasting regulations, your cable provider should give to you for free --- by screwing it into the "Cable In" port on the back of the box. Plug the box into the wall to turn it on.
- 5). Attach another coaxial cable to the "Cable Out" port on the back of the digital converter box. Plug the other end of the cable into the "Cable In" port on your television set. You may need to call your cable provider to activate your digital cable box.
