- 1). Wash the wood with a sponge and soapy water to remove dust and dirt. Allow the wood to dry before proceeding.
- 2). Fill in cracks and dents with wood filler and smooth them out with a putty knife. When the wood filler is dry, sand the entire wood surface with sand paper, moving in long lines along the grain. Sanding the wood will bring out the grain and smooth out the wood filler.
- 3). Apply wood sealer lightly over the wood's surface, using a brush or cloth. Wipe away excess sealer with a clean cloth. Allow the sealer to dry before proceeding.
- 4). Sand the wood again with fine-grade sandpaper.
- 5). Apply a small amount of stain to an inconspicuous area of the wood to ensure a good match. Allow the stain to sink in for five minutes, then wipe it away. Once you are satisfied with the stain's appearance, apply a thin coat of stain to the entire surface of the wood, using a foam brush or soft cloth.
- 6). Wipe the stain with a clean cloth after it sets for five to 15 minutes. Wipe against the grain first, then with the grain. Apply additional thin coats of stain for a deeper color. Let the stain dry for 24 hours before finishing.
- 7). Apply a coat of polyurethane finish with a china bristle brush. Allow the coat to dry, then apply a second coat to protect the wood's surface and add shine.
