There are limitless ideas to modernize old furniture. It all starts with noticing what your space needs to make it more comfortable, stylish and functional. If you have a higher budget, look for furniture in antique stores. If you are on a smaller budget, try flea markets or second-hand stores. - Getting resourceful with your creativity is important with old furniture. If you have an old chest of drawers, and one of the drawers is broken, you can turn it into a shelf or cubbyhole instead. If you need the drawers to be taller to better fit your space, or to make it function as a television stand, screw finials into its underside to create legs.
- A popular idea that is showcased in magazines is to find an old dresser to use as a bathroom sink cabinet. The best type of dresser is one with doors and shelves as opposed to drawers. This will allow you to easily cut a hole in the top and add the sink's drainage pipes.
- Paint an old piece of furniture to better coordinate it with your space. It will most likely look best if you apply the paint with rustic techniques, such as sanding areas (after the paint is dry) that are typically used the most, so that it the age of the piece adds character to the furniture. You can also find rustic painting kits at paint or hardware stores.
