Ideas for Decorating a Child's Playroom

More than anything else a child's playroom is an individual space which should naturally serve as an extension of the child and encourage the development of her individual identity. Therefore the child should have an appropriate say in decorating the playroom; otherwise the room is an extension of another individual with a different identity. Prepare to do a lot of planning prior to bringing the child into the decision-making process. But remember, it is likely that some of the best decisions about the ceilings, walls and floors of the playroom will come from the person using the room, who is small in stature but who has a huge imagination.

    Ceilings

    • The ceilings in most rooms have a clean palette. The local craft store has a selection of paints and adhesive-backed materials that glow in the dark. Mount precut motifs or those designed by an imaginative child onto the ceiling. Use favorite colors that are highly saturated to outline the motifs to give them visual depth during the day. Mount an entire collage on the ceiling using glowing cutout forms.

    Walls

    • One of the most important items for any bedroom is a mirror, which is equally true for a playroom. Select a safety mirror that will not shatter into tiny pieces on impact. Mount the mirror along one free wall from the floor up. Order the mirror at a height that will remain useful to the child for several years. Mount the mirror from the floor up in wide expanses to enhance a child's self discovery.

    Floors

    • Sometimes there just isn't enough floor space to place a small table and chair in a playroom. For this situation, use small cotton chenille rugs which are washable. Coordinate the rugs to the colors of the room. Keep the rugs clean for any child who wishes to belly flop and read a good book. Stacked or scattered, a group of soft cotton chenille rugs can take the place of seating in a playroom where there is no space for a chair.

    Bookcases

    • One of the most important pieces of furniture in the playroom is the floor-to-ceiling bookcase. Solid wood is preferable. Order it custom made if necessary. Choose a color to coordinate with the color scheme. It is one of the best investments ever made for the household. Install shelves that are movable, which can stand up to the daily use of a growing child. Order plenty of shelves for those items other than books that don't have a place of their own in the small playroom.
