How to Make Composts

    • 1). Choose a site for your compost pile that is near the garden but out of the way. The site should get a few hours of sun daily; it helps the compost heat up so the materials break down quickly.

    • 2). Add weeds from your garden, grass clippings, and fruit and vegetable scraps. These are green organic wastes.

    • 3). Add brown organic wastes like dried hay or straw, dried fallen leaves, shredded newspaper or white office paper. Add brown organic matter in 1/3 the volume of the green organic matter.

    • 4). Turn the pile weekly with a large garden fork. Move the materials on the outside of the pile to the inside of the pile and move the materials from the outside to the inside. When finished, use a shovel to scrape the materials back into a pile. Use your hose to wet down the pile if rainfall is scarce.
