- Most well-decorated rooms have an appointed focal point, an area or object in the room that catches the eye and helps direct it around the room. It's often a fireplace or a wall on which you hang a gallery of artwork. If your room is large enough and has a naturally eye-catching feature such as a window seat, consider having two focal points. To further emphasize this interesting feature without detracting from the main focal point, place an area rug in front of it and flank the rug with two armchairs. Practically speaking, this technique also gives you extra sitting space when you have several people over.
- A chocolate brown accent wall brings the soothing qualities of this color into your sitting room without completely repainting the room. Paint the wall of your choice chocolate brown and add a trendy touch by hanging pictures in pastel pink frames and wall sconces with pink candles. Position a cream-colored rug or couch in front of the wall to draw additional attention to it.
- Outdoor rooms are popular and many of them are designed to continue the decorating scheme established in the living room. While some have a simple door connecting one room to the other, you can take this idea a step further. If your budget allows, consider removing the wall that separates the outdoor room from the living room and replacing it with a wall of folding glass doors. You can open up the whole wall to encourage mingling between the two rooms, but close up the doors once company leaves.
- Jazzing up the floors in the sitting room gives it a bit of unexpected personality. Consider painting a design on the floor -- maybe one that you've seen in a textile or wallpaper book. Throw a zebra-print rug on the floor to bring a bit of the African outback into your sitting room.
