Rust Remover Recipes

    Vinegar

    • If the rusty item is small, soak it in undiluted white vinegar. If it is a large item, put the vinegar into a clean spray bottle and spray the rusty item. Let the item soak for approximately 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, rinse the item with water and dry completely. You can repeat as needed.

After soaking the rusty item in vinegar, it may appear black. Don't worry; this will go away after rinsing with water.

    Borax and Lemon Juice

    • Borax and lemon juice works much the same as vinegar. Mix equal parts lemon juice and Borax. Either soak or spray the rusty item with the mixture. Again, let the item soak for 30 minutes. Rinse the mixture off with water and dry completely.

The item may look black because of the lemon juice, but that will go away after rinsing with water. You can repeat this process if the rust is not completely gone.

Oxalic Acid and Water or Citric Acid

    • You can buy oxalic acid powder at most hardware stores. Mix one tsp. of oxalic acid powder with a quart of water and rub it into the rust. Rinse with water and dry. This is an easy way to remove rust from items.

You can get the same result by using citric acid powder instead of oxalic acid. Sometimes citric acid is labeled as sour salt.
