- Sperry Glacier is named for Dr. Lyman Sperry, Gunsight Mountain's first successful climber and the first to discover the glacier in 1894, according to the United States Geological Survey.
- Sperry glacier is situated about 25 miles from the Canadian border. It sits immediately north of Gunsight Mountain on the western side of the Continental Divide.
- Sperry Glacier's location in the center of a heavily glaciated region makes it a good indicator of the region's climate. For this reason, scientists have used the glacier as a benchmark to study the effects of climate change on glaciers.
- The glacier is accessible from a roughly nine mile hiking/ horseback riding trail that begins at Lake McDonald Lodge. Lodging is available closer to the glacier for extended hikes.
- According to National Parks Traveler, due to the warming climate, Sperry Glacier has been reduced from a span of 1.25 square miles in 1901 to just over 0.3 square miles in 2010. Scientists believe that the glacier -- and those surrounding it -- may disappear entirely by 2020.
