- 1). Examine the inside of the washing machine. Wipe any surface mildew that you see with a white cloth dampened with bleach.
- 2). Turn the washing machine to the hottest setting and let the drum fill with water. Pour 2 cups of bleach into the water. Alternatively, use 2 cups of white vinegar instead of the bleach for an all-natural mildew and mold remover.
- 3). Allow the washer to complete a full cycle. The bleach or vinegar will kill mildew growing inside the washing machine as well as any fungus present in the pipes and hoses.
- 4). Fill a sink with hot water. Add one to two drops of liquid dish soap to the water. Agitate the water with a spoon to mix the soap and water together.
- 5). Remove the fabric softener receptacle from the washing machine. Submerge the receptacle into the soapy water and allow it to soak for 20 to 30 minutes.
- 6). Wash the receptacle with a cloth, rinse with running water and wipe dry with a towel. Replace the fabric softener receptacle back into the washing machine.
