- 1). Paint the walls with bold reds and soothing earth tones, like brown, tan, gray, gold, green or off-white. Keep faux finishes to a minimum, opting for simple painted walls instead.
- 2). Select bathroom fixtures with smooth, clean lines. Replace ornate faucet handles and elaborately carved bathtubs with minimalistic sinks and tubs.
- 3). Choose furnishings and cabinets made from dark-colored cherry or mahogany wood, rather than lighter wood tones. Dark, oriental-style wood carvings add elegance to an Asian bathroom. If you do want to use lighter wood, bamboo is your best option.
- 4). Make it organized. Crowded, cluttered surfaces are the biggest enemy of the serenity of an Asian bathroom. Install plenty of closet shelving and use clear plastic containers to keep items organized under the sink rather than out on the counters.
- 5). Go green. Place humidity-loving bamboo shoots, palm trees and bonsai trees throughout the room. They'll thrive off the moisture from the shower and you'll feel like you're in a private Zen garden.
- 6). Provide texture with raw, natural materials. Instead of a fluffy, colorful rug, use a straw mat just outside the shower. Cover the walls and other surfaces with decorations made from silk, sand, rice paper, stones and other similar materials.
- 7). Bring the space alive with traditional Asian accessories like wall scrolls, gongs, Japanese lanterns, Chinese folding fans and Oriental-style statues and figurines. If you have room, set up a folding screen to provide privacy between the sink and the rest of the bathroom.
- 8). Purchase simple linens that match the color scheme of the bathroom. Replace your standard fluffy bathrobe with a silky Kimono and some matching slippers.
