A Clean Canary is a Healthy Canary

Canaries have quite a few talents, but cleaning up after themselves is NOT one of them.
All in all, canaries make quite a few more messes than they'll ever even THINK about tidying (TUT)...
That means (in case you couldn't tell) that YOU, as the canary's owner, need to keep their house clean! A poorly kept habitat can be deadly for canaries! so before investing in your first canary, a cage, or any food, toys and accessories, let me show you exactly how to avoid the headaches and heartbreak of a sick or dying canary and give you the easy techniques to keep your canary super healthy, extremely happy and living a long and energetic life! One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to wait for your canary to show visible signs of illness.
Canaries are experts at hiding weakness and illness so they don't look like easy prey.
In fact, they are so good at concealing what's wrong, often you'll never know until your canary has died.
First off, here are just 6 deadly problems that poor hygiene can cause: -Feather picking and plucking -Internal parasites -Respiratory illnesses and colds (from dust contamination in their food) -Overgrown beaks and claws -Mites and lice -Diarrhoea ...
and the list could go on seemingly forever.
While some of these issues are easily remedies, others can be very serious, even deadly.
The best rule of thumb is for you to regularly clean and disinfect not only your canary's cage, but every other item inside, including feeding/watering dishes, bells, toys, perches, bird baths - you name it.
Aim to do this on average of once each week.
Additionally, it's important to properly line your cage floor with something absorbent to help keep odours and droppings issues down to a minimum.
If your cage comes with a bottom grate, it's also a good idea to use sand or gravel paper.
If there is no bottom grate, instead rely on a layer of corn cob or another similar substitute.
Grates will prevent your canary from walking in the soiled bottom and from eating anything soiled down below and getting ill.
Replace any liners every two or three days - don't wait until your weekly clean up or you could wind up with some SERIOUS hygienic issues before you know it...
If the cage has any hard-to-clean grub or debris, use a stiff brush to scour the wires and continue to do so until all "cling-ons" have been removed.
When you clean your perches, you can also use a stiff brush or specialty cleaning tool available at most pet stores, just remember to be sure that your wooden perches or branches are COMPLETELY dried out before re-introducing your bird into the cage, as exposure to this dampness can result in respiratory and other serious health concerns..
